Race Day Forecast Calls For Pain

No.  That is not a typo.  That is a prediction.  And I believe it is about as accurate as most weather forecasts these days.

Five weeks from today is race day and I am woefully unprepared.  Not sure where my training got derailed, but it is what it is.  I will continue to prepare the best I can and just deal with the carnage as it happens.

Even though it is a little late in the game, I decided to do a little race reconnaissance using a tried and true method available these days: Google Race Report Search. Unfortunately, that proved to be a major mistake. Here are a few excerpts from the reports I perused:

  • Brutal
  • Steep climb that lasted almost three miles
  • You’ll probably cry, but you’ll still love it
  • Another uphill?
  • Some big hill called “Death” or “Annihilator”…..
  • This is going to be a long day
  • I would like to be done now…..thanks.
  • If you want to punish yourself, this is the place to do it.

If you are and Ultra Runner and think you are a BADA$$, this is the race for you!

Screwed may be an understatement. Oh well. Like I said, it is what it is.

When I was talking to my friend Paul after the Rocketkidz Foundation meeting, he asked how my training was going. I told him the truth. And then he said this, “Well, you know what to do, so just go do it.” And he was right.

I know how to put my head down and grind out the miles. I know how to manage crippling cramps and keep moving forward. I know pain. I know fatigue. I know misery. I know what to do….I just have to go do it.

And I know why I am doing it to.  For Mason and those battling Crohn’s.

So as of now, there is probably an 80% chance of pain on race day.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Whatever!

  1. Which race are you doing? I can think of one or two where I went unprepared. It was still fun. I DNF’d CR100 at mile 85 because I missed the time cutoff. It sucked but I hadn’t trained the way I should. I still had a relatively decent memory of it all. Go have fun.
