I have been trying to figure out a good analogy for where I am right now. And I finally came to the conclusion that the bottom of a crevasse is good enough.
At first I was thinking I was at the bottom of a hill with a long uphill battle ahead of me. And that would not be too far off considering 8 weeks from right now the race will be over one way or another. And if you throw in the fact that I ran a total of 13 miles this week, then the appearance of an uphill struggle is evident.
But the difference is that I am not starting at the bottom of a mountain looking up. I was on top of the mountain with training runs of 20, 30, 40 miles and some pretty good back to back runs. My weekly mileage had gotten up to 70 miles. I was running in the thin air and in good shape. That is until I fell in the crevasse.
And in the crevasse I have remained for the past few weeks. Only this week have I started to formulate an escape route. Only this week have I begun checking my extremities for broken bones or contusions. Only this week have I even started looking up to see where the top is. And as of right now, I still do not see it.
But the simple fact that I ran 13 miles this week is good enough for today. It will not be good enough next week, but that is all part of the process. I haven’t resigned myself to lay in this ditch and just let things go by. I may be missing some body parts when I stand at the starting line, but I will be standing there.
All week long I have been doing little tests to check out the leg. Next weekend will be a good one. I am running the Thunderbird 6K trail run Saturday night and turning around and running the trail half marathon the next morning. It will only be 17 miles total, but that is much more than I have done in several weeks. And the fact that it is on a trail call The Beast is just a bonus. I always love the bonus parts!
