I went for another test run this afternoon and verified something I had already presumed: the slower you go in cold weather the colder you will be. I headed out about an hour before sunset and the weather seemed okay. At least it would have been okay if I were running the whole time. The walking part was not pleasant. The wind was blowing just hard enough to make the cooler weather a little bit nipply.
I started off with my walk/run routine and slowly shifted it to more running than walking. I could feel my leg when I would go from walking to running, but it would ease up once I got up to speed. Once again, I will withhold my judgement until tomorrow. So far it seems to be holding up.
The other day I was talking with one of my pacers, Paul, about possible clothing for the race. He had gone on a early 5 mile run in 28 degree weather and was pretty satisfied with his attire. I am sure it was perfect if you are running a 9 minute pace. But how cold would you be if you were trudging at a 20 minute per mile pace? Because that is a very likely scenario.
I’m still going with the pack for Antarctica approach to this race. I can always take clothes off…….at least until I am nekkid.
