I posted a question on the Facebook page concerning the “Ask the Ultrarunner” segment on the Endurance Planet Podcast. My question went something like this:
Hi. I’m stupid. I am training for a 100 mile run but I hurt my fibula. I took off 2 weeks and now I want to go do all the things that caused me to get hurt in the first place. Can I do that?
They responded with a 10 minute answer that started with the word, “NO”. Why was I not surprised? Anyway, that means it is time for training plan revision number seven!
The bottom line is that if I ramp my mileage back up to the pre-injury level while I am trying to heal, then I will end up injured again. He also said that it would be better to be standing at the starting line under trained and healthy than moderately trained and injured. That seems logical.
His training suggestion is to build back up my long runs on the weekend, but to substitute bike workouts for some of my weekly runs. I also need to strengthen the front muscles of my leg to eliminate the imbalance which probably caused the stress reaction in the first place.
I do know that I am running out of time to make revisions. Pretty soon the only thing on my schedule will be to run 100 miles. And drink beer.
