With the mapping of the human genome, I am sure the research scientists are having a blast identifying different genetic traits. Of course the more serious ones relating to abnormalities or diseases are not fun but important to discover. However, I am curious if they will ever find a ‘stupidity’ gene or a ‘masochist’ gene.
During the trail half marathon this weekend, a few of my friends were saying they would never run trails again! But as they were limping around yesterday, they took time to research the latest trail shoes! These are the same type individuals who finish a marathon and swear ‘Never Again!!!!!’. And as they are driving home, they pull out their iPhone and see what they can enter next.
When I did my first Ironman I promised my wife it would be a very long time before I did another one. I finished my second one two years later.
During my 50 miler, the volunteers at the last aid station said ‘We will see you next year’. I smiled and thought to myself, ‘No way in hell.’. This February I will be back there. It is three years later but I also doubled the distance.
Right now I cannot fathom any conceivable race I would like to do after this 100 miler. When asked I will not even entertain a discussion of possibilities.
But what scares me is that I believe I am afflicted with both the ‘stupidity’ gene and the ‘masochist’ gene. And that is a very bad thing.
