I got chicken today and I didn’t run. I was supposed to run around 8 miles today. With the way my leg felt, I decided to switch my workouts around and run 4 to 5 instead. And then a monsoon hit at work today. As I was standing there watching the storm blow sideways with hail hitting everywhere, a bolt of lightning hit a tree 50 yards away splintering bark in all directions. Wow. That was cool.
The problem is that less than 15 minutes earlier I had made the walk from the shop in the back up to the front. And I did not get hit with one drop of rain. This storm came out of nowhere.
Fast forward to this afternoon when Christine and I were planning to go for a run. Every 5 minutes, the TV started blaring the emergency broadcast warning about a storm coming. So we went and sat on the back porch and watched it. There was rain. There was wind. There was lightning. And there we were. Just watching. And I decided to skip my run.
I keep going back to what most ultrarunning websites say about training in all weather. Just do it. Because you never know what the weather will be on race day. But I got chicken anyway. Wind I can handle. Rain……no problem. Lightning that I saw destroy a tree today…….well I am chicken.
Tomorrow I will run in the rain no matter what.
